At Cave Springs Pet Hospital, we use ultrasound imaging as a safe, non-invasive way to see what’s happening inside your pet’s body in real time. Whether we’re investigating an illness, monitoring a condition, or confirming a pregnancy, ultrasound helps us diagnose and treat health concerns with greater accuracy—without the need for surgery or sedation in most cases.
Ultrasound is an essential tool for compassionate, proactive veterinary care.
When Is an Ultrasound Recommended?
Ultrasound is ideal for viewing soft tissues and internal organs. Your veterinarian may recommend an ultrasound for:
- Vomiting or changes in appetite
- Abdominal pain or bloating
- Weight loss with no known cause
- Changes in urination or bowel movements
- Suspected tumors or masses
- Monitoring chronic conditions (kidney, liver, bladder, etc.)
- Confirming and monitoring pregnancy
Ultrasound can help us visualize and assess organs such as the liver, kidneys, bladder, spleen, intestines, uterus, and heart. In many cases, it can help us detect issues that X-rays alone may not reveal.
What to Expect During an Ultrasound
Ultrasound appointments are typically quick, gentle, and stress-free. Most pets do not require sedation, though it may be used for those who are anxious or uncomfortable. Here’s what to expect:
- Preparation
A small area of fur may be shaved to allow for clearer imaging. - Imaging
Using a handheld probe and ultrasound gel, we gently scan the area of concern while your pet lies comfortably on a padded table. - Results & Next Steps
Your veterinarian will review the images in real time and may consult with a board-certified radiologist if needed. Based on what we find, we’ll discuss any additional diagnostics or treatment options.
Ultrasound offers peace of mind through clarity. It allows us to detect problems earlier, treat conditions more effectively, and keep your pet on the path to good health.
